Balancing High School Responsibilities and Dance Studio Training

April 18, 20264 min read

High school comes with new responsibilities…AP classes, homework, exams, dance team, social life, and college prep. It’s a lot, and many teens assume the only solution is to step away from the studio or quit their competition team.

But here’s the truth we want every teen (and parent) to hear:

You don’t have to choose. You really can do it all with the right balance, support, and plan.

The truth is that the dancers who stay connected to studio training, especially competition teams, are often the ones who grow the most during these years.

At PBADA, we’ve watched countless dancers successfully juggle high school expectations while still training, competing, and thriving. They become stronger, more confident, and more disciplined..which are all skills that follow them far beyond the studio.

Why Dancing enriches the High School Experience

1. Structure & Increased Time Management Skills

Teens who remain in structured activities tend to manage their time better. Knowing they have technique class or competition rehearsal in the evening naturally encourages them to finish homework, prioritize responsibilities, and keep a healthy schedule.

Studio dancer Jordyn told us…

“Dance pushes me to stay organized with both my schoolwork and rehearsals. Even though balancing dance and school isn’t always easy, it’s helped me learn how to manage my time and stay focused on what matters most to me.”

2. Studio Training Makes Dance Team Dancers Stand Out

While dance team builds performance energy and community, studio training builds technique…Staying involved in technique classes (or staying on a comp team with structured rehearsals) makes dancers stronger, safer, and more versatile.

The dancers who manage both often become:

✔️ Captains

✔️ Leaders

✔️ The ones getting noticed at auditions

✔️ The dancers solos, or stand out roles

Because they bring the polish only studio training provides.

3. Your Dance Community Adapts With You

At PBADA, your studio home grows with you…not the other way around.

We offer flexible options so you can stay involved without losing your connection:

• Reduced-commitment competition options

• Weekday rehearsals around class times

• Summer intensives that keep skills sharp without adding stress

• Reduced required classes for dancers on dance team

We aim to support our High Schoolers so they can be set up for success no matter what path they chose post graduation!

Tips From PBADA Dancers Who Do It All

We asked some of our dancers who balance studio classes, comp team, high school, and dance team what helps them most. Here’s what they shared:

These dancers are organized, supported, and determined. And they’re proving that balance is possible.

“Staying organized and intentional with my time allowed me to stay focused, manage stress, and carry a strong work ethic into both dance and school. Throughout high school, dance became my support system. It gave me a space to reset, relieve stress, and step away from academic pressure while still staying productive. Having that outlet helped me stay motivated, balanced, and mentally grounded in both my schoolwork and my other commitments.” - Jayden S.

“Being on PBCO throughout my high school years has taught me to have time management skills so I’m able to balance a rigorous school schedule….I make sure to bring homework to do during breaks!” -Kira P.

“Balancing school and dance is always getting more difficult, but at the same time I am always getting more determined. The best way to maintain balance is to work on my homework during any breaks I have so I can take time to rest when I get home from dance.” Sojie E.

“Even after a hard day at school, I know dance will always be there for me. As a junior in high school, balancing everything can be tough sometimes, but dance pushes me to stay organized with both my schoolwork and rehearsals.” -Jordyn S.

“Being involved in both also showed me how to manage my time better and stay organized so I could balance practices, performances, and my schoolwork.” -Imani R.

Final Thoughts-You Don’t Have to Give Up the Part of You That Loves Dance

High school is important. Academics matter. Dance team is exciting.

But your passion matters too.

If dance is part of who you are, you don’t have to give it up...not now, not because someone says you should, not because life is getting busier.

With structure, support, and a flexible training plan, teens can thrive in every area of their life. And staying connected to dance, especially through a team that pushes you, supports you, and understands your goals, becomes one of the most grounding parts of those intense, formative years.

At Palm Beach Academy of Dance Arts, we’re here to help every dancer find the balance that works for them and offer pathway meetings for our students to help mentor them through these important life milestones
