Representation Matters: The Importance of Flesh-Toned Dancewear

November 10, 20251 min read

Learn why PBADA encourages flesh-toned tights and shoes and how it helps every dancer feel seen, celebrated, and confident.

At PBADA, our mission is to create a dance environment where every dancer feels seen, supported, and celebrated. One of the ways we live that value is by encouraging our ballet dancers to wear tights and shoes that match their individual skin tone.

Traditionally, ballet pink was meant to mimic the skin of white dancers, creating a “seamless line” from leg to toe. But the art of ballet belongs to everyone. By embracing dancewear that reflects the beautiful diversity of our students, we send a clear message: You belong here.

This small but powerful change makes a lasting impact. When dancers see themselves represented in their art form, they gain confidence and connection. They feel proud of who they are and inspired to take up space - on stage and beyond it.

At PBADA, inclusion isn’t a buzzword... it’s the heartbeat of everything we do. From our teaching staff to our costuming policies, we’re committed to ensuring every dancer feels celebrated in their own skin.
